Trincomalee

Apart from its beaches, Trincomalee is noted for its many exciting cultural sites that simply must be explored.

Things to see:

Nilaveli Beach is the beachfront that Trincomalee is most famous for, perfect for swimming, fishing and a wide array of water sports. Enjoy activities such as scuba-diving, snorkelling, surfing, and whale-watching.

Pigeon Island is a charming little rocky islet just off the coast of Nilaveli Beach. It is a busy breeding ground for the blue-rock pigeon, and it can be easily reached by motorboat, available to rent from the various boat stands along the beachfront.

The Koneswaram Hindu Temple, dating back to 205 BC, is a splendid tribute to the deity of Shiva in the Hindu faith. It is located on top of a scenic promontory that provides panoramic views of the city, Gokarna Bay and the Indian Ocean. Koneswaram is a famous temple that boasts strong historical associations with various Hindu myths and legends. Many of these are detailed in its ornate Gopuram (monumental tower) above the temple entrance that features the impressively intricate South Indian architectural style.

The hot springs at Kanniyai are situated a short 8 Kms from Trincomalee. Visitors can bathe in the seven springs famed for their therapeutic properties.

For an unforgettable excursion in one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic East Coast cities, venture into Trincomalee.
