The Puliyanthivu area of Batticaloa is filled with historical and cultural monuments that are best discovered by walking through the main street. Explore the grand St. Mary’s Cathedral, the iconic Batticaloa Gate, and the impressive Jami-Us-Salam mosque, among many others. Enjoy the colonial architecture of the schools in the area, such as St. Michael’s College and St. Vincent’s Girls High School.
The Old Dutch Fort is the main attraction of the Puliyanthivu area. It is an impressive structure originally built by the Portuguese in 1628, but later captured by the Dutch. This square-shaped structure with 4 bastions meets the welcoming waters of the blue lagoon on two sides creating a spectacular sight.
Batticaloa Bazaar is a lively local market that offers everything from spices and fresh vegetables to intriguing handicrafts, capturing the authentic flavours of Batticaloa. Enjoy the sight of fresh produce piled in colourful disarray along the makeshift isles. Have a chat with the friendly locals and ask them which spices make the most delicious curries. You could also pick up some trinkets and souvenirs to take home.
Batti Lagoon Park. Hire a paddle boat, kayak or swan boat to enjoy the natural surroundings of the beautiful blue lagoon, home to the famous “singing fish”, which are fish that emit musical notes.
